Hoag Named a 5-Star Hospital By CMS

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., July 26, 2022 — Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian is one of 429 hospitals nationwide, 33 in California and the only hospital in the county to receive a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for 2022. This is the highest possible achievement of CMS’s Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings.

CMS assigns star ratings to hospitals across the country based on the performances in five quality categories: mortality, readmission, safety of care, patient experience and timely and effective care. This ranking system was created to help consumers easily compare hospitals to make more informed decisions about their care.

“The rating is a testament to the efforts Hoag has made to improve patient safety and lower hospital readmission rates. That these improvements were achieved to the highest standard during the pandemic is a testament to Hoag’s commitment to our community,” said Robert T. Braithwaite, Hoag president and CEO. “We are honored by this recognition of Hoag’s commitment to excellence. I continue to be proud and awed by the dedication and compassion our team exhibits every day.”

Braithwaite noted that Hoag’s score particularly stood out in terms of patient experience. Hoag received all eight of the quality measures in this category, and all seven of the measures in the mortality category.

“Hoag is known for its excellence and innovation, for providing the community with access to cutting-edge clinical trials and technology, but patients are at the heart of what we do and who we are,” he said. “We are humbled to have been recognized for the care we provide, and we will strive to continue to serve as leaders in health care in Orange County and nationwide.”
