Endovascular Procedures

Endovascular Procedures

Endovascular procedures are less invasive than traditional cardiac surgery and therefore recovery and time in the hospital tends to be much shorter than with traditional surgery.

Endovascular Procedures

The term endovascular literally means “inside the vein”.  A cardiac surgeon can repair many types of defects and treat some vascular diseases by inserting a tiny flexible hollow tube called a ‘catheter’ into a blood vessel through a tiny incision in the groin area and directing it to the area where the problem exists.

Special ‘moving’ xray is used at the same time the catheter is inserted in order to see the exact location and progress of the catheter through the blood vessel. In some cases, traditional surgery, where an incision is made in the chest, may need to be done to treat the problem; your surgeon will discuss these options in advance of any treatment.

Endovascular Stent Graft

An endovascular stent graft is often used to reinforce a weak area of an artery. It is most commonly used to treat aneurysms; which are places along an artery where the arterial wall has grown weak, either from too much pressure, a defect you may have been born with, or a specific injury to that blood vessel.
