For over 20 years, Hoag Family Cancer Institute has been privileged to treat and stand alongside many patients in their fight against cancer.

Harry Welch

Harry Welch has a persistent, yet life-saving friend. Following a successful surgery to remove his prostate cancer, Harry's good friend, Mark Eskander, urged him to be screened for prostate cancer as well. In his insistence, on the spot, Mark called and made an appointment for Harry with his physician and surgeon, Jeffrey Yoshida, M.D., urologist and program director for Hoag Urologic Oncology.

To comply with his friends' persistent wishes, Harry met with Dr. Yoshida who recommended a PSA test and digital rectal exam (DRE). Harry's PSA level was well within normal limits, but his DRE was slightly irregular. Because of this, Dr. Yoshida urged Harry to have a prostate biopsy, which was performed and ultimately revealed cancer.

Don Roberts

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lung cancer is responsible for the majority of cancer deaths in both men and women throughout the United States.

This fact is why Donald Roberts' primary care physician recommended that he get a lung CT scan, based on his past history of smoking. Donald (Don), who had been a smoker for more than 40 years, was attending his annual physical when he received this life-saving recommendation.

Patty Goethals

Patty Goethals is a three-time cancer survivor. The Newport Beach resident and mother of three has survived melanoma skin cancer, uterine cancer and most recently, breast cancer. Patty was concerned that based on her history of cancer and knowing that breast cancer can be hereditary; her daughter may be at risk. Thankfully, Patty's breast cancer surgeon referred her to the Hereditary Cancer Program at Hoag.

During the genetic assessment of Patty's family history, Hoag certified genetic counselor Jeanne Homer, M.S., discovered that Patty's mother had once battled uterine cancer and her brother had bile duct cancer. Both of these cancers are linked to the hereditary cancer syndrome, lynch syndrome.
