Dr. Michael Hurwitz explains what to do if you notice a wound that is not healing properly

​A patient with a wound that is not healing properly should first consult with their physician to determine the correct course of action. Types of conditions that physicians recommend for specialized care can include: diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, a chronic wound from radiation therapy, or a skin injury that won’t heal. Even seemingly small diabetic foot wounds, if unrecognized or undertreated, can rapidly progress, resulting in infection, amputation and loss of mobility, and sometimes permanent disability.

During initial evaluation, specialists at Hoag’s wound healing center will identify factors that adversely affect healing, such as peripheral arterial disease or chronic infection. Depending on the condition identified, available therapies may be offered to stimulate tissue re-growth and healing, including the use of living cell skin substitutes and hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy.
