    Support Groups
    Hoag Family Cancer Institute support groups provide mutual support and information for cancer patients and their families. Groups are facilitated by licensed clinical social workers and oncology nurses. Discussion is focused on current issues faced by cancer patients and their support network. There is no charge for the following groups.
    In addition to the support groups listed below, Hoag offers free cancer education programs to support patients in their quest for knowledge. For more information, please call 949-7-CANCER (722-6237). View our monthly calendar.

    Heart Matters Support Group  – Join our monthly support group for the cardiac patient, their partner, family members, or caregivers. Our Licensed Clinical Social Worker Stephanie  Fermelia will discuss topics such as managing stress, depression and anxiety, handling anger, and coping with lifestyle changes and loss.     Brain Aneurysm / AVM  – Brain aneurysm survivors, Shail Lal, M.D. and Chris MacDuff, host a support group for those diagnosed or treated for an aneurysm or arteriovenous malformations (AVM) of the brain. Meetings are scheduled for the first Wednesday of every other month at 6:30pm at Hoag Conference Center. For more information, please call Hoag Neurosciences Administration at 949-764-5942.

    Brain Tumor  – Held on the third Wednesday of each month from 3–5pm at the Advanced Technology Pavilion. This is both an educational and support group for anyone diagnosed with a primary brain tumor or metastatic disease. Family and friends are welcome to join us.     Epilepsy   – The Epilepsy Center at Hoag Hospital offers interactive support groups​ for all adolescent and adult epilepsy patients in both English and Spanish. Join us for group discussions to help you better understand and cope with epilepsy. The support group meets on the first Wednesday of every month from 6:30–8:00 pm at Hoag Neurosciences Institute Conference Room (3rd Floor of Hoag Conference Center), as well as another group at CHOC Children's Hospital the second Friday of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. For more information, please call 949-764-6066.

    Insomnia  – Hoag Neurosciences Institute offers a complementary Insomnia Support Group for patients dealing with Insomnia. Topics include: general insomnia information, sleep hygiene, relaxation and meditation tips.

    The support group meets the first Thursday of every month from 6-7 p.m. at Hoag Health Center-Newport Beach in the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center, Classroom 2.

    Parkinson's/Movement Disorders – As part of Hoag Hospital's commitment to better serve its community with the highest level of quality care, it's proud to sponsor weekly support groups and seminars for patients with Parkinson's, their families, caregivers and medical professionals.     Sleep Apnea Health Awareness Groups 

    Alert, Well and Keeping Energetic (AWAKE) 


    AWAKE, a health awareness group network from the American Sleep Apnea Association, provides education about healthy sleeping, the latest products for Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, masks, accessories and more. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss concerns they are having with their sleep and address any issues if they are using CPAP.

    Held quarterly on the second Wednesday of the month from 6 – 7 p.m. at Hoag Health Center-Newport Beach in the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center, Classroom 2.

    Stroke - The Stroke support group is held on the fourth Thursday of every month from 2 – 3:30 p.m. at Hoag Conference Center. For more information, please call 949-764-1454.

    Bereavement Support Groups

    You are welcome to participate in these support groups that are offered free of charge.  The groups will provide you with the emotional support that you need to get through this difficult time.
    Facing Forward - This is a general bereavement group faciliated by Marilyn Kaplan, LCSW, for participants over the age of 18, offering support to those who have lost a loved one. This group meets on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m., at 307 Placentia Avenue, Suite 105-B. Register Online.

    Life Goes On - This group meets at 307 Placentia Avenue, Suite 105-B, on Friday nights from 7:00-8:30 p.m., when the group is in progress. Marilyn Kaplan, LCSW, facilitates this group. This is a time-limited group, meeting for 10 consecutive weeks. Regular attendance is required. To register, call 949-764-8358.

    Growth Through Grief  - This group meets on Friday evenings from 5:00-6:30 p.m., at 307 Placentia Avenue, Suite 105-B. Marilyn Kaplan, LCSW, leads this group, as well. Attendance at Life Goes On or some other bereavement group is a prerequisite for this group. To register, call 949-764-8358.

    Cancer Bereavement Support Group - Bereavement support for adults who have lost a loved one to cancer. The group meets the every Thursday of each month from 5:30–7 p.m. in Hoag Cancer Center Auditorium. Register Online.​
    Religious Services

    • Catholic Mass service: Every Saturday from 4-4:30 p.m. This service satisfies Sunday requirements and Holy Communion is offered. All are welcome.
    • Hospital-wide Holiday Worship: Christmas and Good Friday
    • Sacramental Services: Communion, Baptism, marriages, blessings
    • Literature distribution/Other items: Bibles, books, pamphlets, crosses
    • Closed circuit television devotions and religious programs to patient rooms on Channel 12.


    Pregnancy & Infant Loss -  Hoag’s Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Group is facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker with many years of experience in working with families who have experienced a loss. The group is open to anyone who has suffered a loss, including those whose loss did not occur at Hoag. Extended family members are welcome to attend with you. Parents who have experienced a loss after a difficult decision are also welcome.
